About the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation

The Meet Us in Mission event marks the completion of an 18-month project to upgrade Mission Beach’s ageing town centre infrastructure.

The Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project was jointly funded by the Australian Government, Queensland Government (via the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program), and the Cassowary Coast Regional Council. The Queensland Government contributed $3.52 million to the project.

Key improvements include:

  • New underground services and stormwater infrastructure
  • Upgraded footpaths, roads and intersections
  • Enhanced street lighting
  • New awning structures
  • Renewed toilet facilities
  • New street furniture and public art
  • Upgrades to the Village Green and Porter Promenade

The project was guided by the 2018 Mission Beach Strategic Master Plan and reflects community feedback gathered during the design consultation process. Design elements include rainforest-to-reef theming, cassowary footprints and a new nature play area.

The official opening took place on Friday 17 April 2026 at the Village Green.

Why Visit Mission Beach

Mission Beach sits at the point where World Heritage–listed rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef – one of only two places in Australia where these ecosystems meet.

It’s home to Australia’s highest density of endangered southern cassowaries, accessible beaches stretching over 14 kilometres, and a relaxed village atmosphere that feels a world away from the busier tourist hubs further north.

From Mission Beach, you can catch the ferry to Dunk Island (just 15 minutes offshore), explore walking tracks through the rainforest, or simply park yourself at a beachside café and do very little at all.

The revitalised town centre makes that last option even easier.

Getting to Mission Beach

Mission Beach is located on the Cassowary Coast in Far North Queensland, approximately:

  • 140km south of Cairns (around 1 hour 45 minutes by car)
  • 240km north of Townsville (around 2 hours 45 minutes by car)

Porter Promenade – where most of the Saturday activities are taking place – is the main beachfront strip in Mission Beach township.
