Swimming Safely During Stinger Season
January falls within stinger season in Far North Queensland, when dangerous marine stingers including box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present in coastal waters. Stinger season typically runs from November through to May.
During this time, it’s important to only swim within patrolled stinger nets or in enclosed swimming areas. Stinger nets provide a protected swimming enclosure, but they are not a complete barrier – always remain vigilant and follow safety signage at each beach.
If you plan to swim, snorkel or participate in water activities outside of stinger nets, wearing a full-length lycra stinger suit is strongly recommended. Stinger suits are available for hire or purchase from local tour operators and dive shops.
What to Do If You’re Stung
Vinegar stations are located at patrolled beaches throughout the Cassowary Coast. If someone is stung:
- Call for help and alert lifeguards if present
- Douse the sting area liberally with vinegar for at least 30 seconds
- Call 000 if the person shows signs of a serious reaction
- Do not rub the sting area or apply fresh water
For more information on marine stinger safety, visit the Queensland Government’s stinger safety guidelines.
Plan Your Beach Day
With stinger nets returning to Cassowary Coast beaches, it’s a great time to enjoy a swim at some of the region’s most beautiful spots. Mission Beach, Etty Bay and Kurrimine Beach all offer calm, clear waters perfect for cooling off during the tropical summer.
If you’re heading to South Mission Beach before the net is reinstalled, consider visiting one of the other patrolled beaches or checking with locals for the latest updates.
