Stay on Dunk Island
Dunk Island Accommodation
Dunk Island Accommodation
There’s a different version of Dunk Island that only overnight guests get to see. After the last ferry pulls away, the beaches empty, the light softens and the island settles into something quieter.
It’s the part most visitors miss, and the part that stays with you longest. Whether you choose a Beachfront Eco Tent or a Bayside Campsite, staying on Dunk is about tuning in to a slower rhythm. No schedule, no rush. Just the sea, the forest and as much space as you need.
What are the current accommodation options available on Dunk Island?
Accommodation on Dunk Island is limited by design. Fewer guests means a calmer island – more space on the trails, quieter beaches, and a pace that feels genuinely unhurried.
There are two options: Beachfront Eco Tents and Bayside Campsites. Both come with access to shared amenities, the Dunk Island Restaurant, walking tracks and the water.
Beachfront Eco Tents
Dunk Island Glamping
Available Wednesday to Sunday from 1 April 2026
The Eco Tents are tucked into the coastal landscape, shaded by trees and close enough to the water to fall asleep to the sound of it. They’re designed for guests who want to stay connected to the outdoors without giving up a good night’s sleep.
Inside, things are simple but comfortable. A proper bed, crisp linen, a fan for the warm nights. Outside, the beach is a short walk and the forest starts at your door.
Three configurations are available:
- Twin Single – two single beds, good for friends travelling together
- Twin Queen – two queen beds, suited to families
- King – one king bed, ideal for couples or solo travellers
Each tent includes:
- Linen and towels
- Power outlet and charging dock
- Lantern, fan and esky with ice
Booking details:
- Minimum 2 nights, maximum 4 nights
- Bathrooms are shared, located at the nearby amenities block
- Tents are not air-conditioned – consider this if you’re sensitive to heat, particularly from November to May
Dunk Island Camping - Bayside Campsites
If you travel light and like your camping close to the water, the Bayside Campsites offer exactly that. You’re set up under the trees, a few steps from the sand, with the kind of quiet that only comes from being somewhere truly out of the way.
Campsites suit visitors who find comfort in simplicity – a tent, a view, long days in the water and not much else to think about.
Details:
- 6 campsites in total
- Each site fits up to 6 people (2 adults, 4 children)
- No minimum stay, but a maximum of 4 nights applies
- Access to shared amenities, picnic areas and BBQ facilities
These sites tend to attract repeat visitors and locals who appreciate what a simple setup on a quiet island actually offers.
How To Spend A Day On Dunk Island
Dunk Island sits where the reef meets the rainforest, and that mix shapes how you spend your time here. One moment you’re walking through shaded forest corridors, the next you’re floating over coral gardens just offshore.
The island’s sheltered inner reefs are ideal for snorkelling – calm, coral-fringed waters full of colourful reef fish. Partner tour operators run 2-hour snorkelling trips around the island for those who want a guided experience. For the full reef spectacle, a day trip to Beaver Reef is worth the effort – it’s widely regarded as one of the most picturesque sites on the Great Barrier Reef, with crystal-clear water, rich coral formations and marine life that stays with you long after you’re back on dry land.
Closer to shore, hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the coastline at your own pace. Glide along quiet bays, drift over shallow reef edges or simply float and take in the surroundings.
Much of Dunk Island is protected national park, with walking tracks that lead through dense rainforest, along beaches and up to lookouts with long views across the water. Trails range from gentle coastal strolls to the climb up Mount Kootaloo, where the vista stretches across the Family Islands and back to the mainland ranges. Along the way, you’ll pass ancient rock formations, towering trees and forest corridors that feel far removed from everyday life.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Look for the electric-blue Ulysses butterfly in rainforest clearings, brush turkeys scratching through the leaf litter, orange-footed scrubfowl and tree frogs in the undergrowth. Over 150 bird species have been recorded on the island, from coastal terns to soaring osprey. Freshwater streams and ponds are home to saw-shelled turtles, quietly doing their part in the island’s ecosystem.
When hunger sets in, the island restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday from 8am for breakfast and lunch, with views across Brammo Bay. Or bring your own supplies and use the BBQ area – there’s something about cooking outside on an island that makes even a simple meal feel like an occasion.
