Reef Sites Visited by Mission Beach Dive

Mission Beach Dive visits outer Great Barrier Reef sites that are protected as Marine Park Green Zones. These sites have been protected from fishing and anchoring since 1974.

Beaver Reef – The primary reef site, located approximately 60–90 minutes by boat from Mission Beach. Beaver Reef features coral gardens, reef walls and marine life including reef sharks, turtles and schooling fish.

Taylor Reef – An outer reef site with bommies and coral gardens.

Eddy Reef – A pristine outer reef system.

Ellison Reef – Another Green Zone reef site accessible from Mission Beach.

The travel time from Mission Beach to the outer reef is 60–90 minutes, compared to 90–120 minutes or more from Cairns operators. This shorter transit time means more time on the reef.

How Long is a Mission Beach Dive Day Trip?

A typical reef day trip runs approximately 6–8 hours including travel time, briefings and time on the reef. Trips include visits to two reef sites with time for snorkelling and/or diving at each location. Trips depart in the morning and return in the afternoon.

Why Choose Mission Beach Dive Over Cairns Operators?

Mission Beach Dive offers several advantages compared to larger operators departing from Cairns or Port Douglas:

Smaller group sizes: Mission Beach Dive limits trips to a maximum of 12 divers, compared to 100–300+ passengers on large pontoon operations from Cairns.

Shorter travel time: The outer reef is 60–90 minutes from Mission Beach, compared to 90–120 minutes or more from Cairns. This means more time on the reef and less time on the boat.

Less crowded reef sites: Mission Beach operators visit quieter, less-trafficked reef systems in Marine Park Green Zones.

Locally owned: Mission Beach Dive is a small, owner-operated business, not a large commercial tourism company.

Unique location: Mission Beach is where World Heritage rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Visitors can spot southern cassowaries in the morning and dive pristine coral in the afternoon.

Sustainability and Environmental Practices

Mission Beach Dive operates within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Area. The business implements the following environmental practices:

  • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen required on all trips
  • Strict no-touch policy for marine life
  • Single-use plastics banned onboard
  • Waste minimisation and recycling systems
  • Active participation in reef health monitoring
  • Support for local conservation initiatives

Mission Beach Dive provides all snorkelling and scuba diving equipment on tours. Rental gear is premium CRESSI equipment. The dive shop at The Village Green offers equipment sales, rentals and expert fitting services.
