Cairns Milky Way Masterclass: Learning to Shoot the Stars with David Magro Astrophotography

Some experiences demand silence. Not out of respect, more out of awe.

The Cairns Milky Way Masterclass is one of those. You stand quietly in the dark, camera in hand, and look up. The night sky unfolds slowly, like it’s waiting for you to really see it.

And you do.

What the Masterclass Involves (And What It Doesn’t)

This event is all about capturing the stillness of the night and learning how to take pictures of something most people only glance at.

Led by astrophotographer David Magro, the class takes place in a dark-sky location just outside Cairns, far from city light, far from noise. You’ll be shown how to use your camera to shoot the Milky Way as it stretches over the Queensland landscape.

You’ll cover things like:

  • Manual settings for low-light photography
  • Focusing in the dark
  • Composition for star fields
  • Tracking the galactic core

Who It’s For

The Cairns astrophotography session is built for curious beginners, solo travellers, or even couples looking for something quieter than the usual reef tour.

Bring your own camera and tripod, or book a rental. If you’ve got the basics of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, you’re set. If not? That’s kind of the point of the class.

Shoot the Sky, Keep the Moment

Some shots live on your camera roll. Others stay in your head. This masterclass is about the ones that stay in your head, or the moment you stopped looking at the stars, and started looking into them.

The Cairns Milky Way Masterclass gives you the tools to take the photo. But the feeling? That part’s yours to keep.
